Program Character:

General U.S. Grant-Commander of the Army of the Potomac and the Union Forces

In this Program, I play U.S. Grant from shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg through the end of the Civil War.  It covers the final battle plans from Sherman’s March, Sheridan’s taking of the Shenandoah Valley, and Grants move to cut off Robert E. Lee in Virginia.  It will also mention major events from Gettysburg through Lincoln’s assassination.

Student Roles:

Students will play various Northern generals, messengers, Abraham Lincoln and several Southern Soldiers including Robert E. Lee and his aide.  Set up for students takes about 15 minutes and I will send copies of their roles so they can look over them before I meet with them.  Male or female students can play all roles.

Props:

Grant will be wearing Northern Army Uniform-No weapons

Cards with student roles

Small table or desk-2-3 can be out together and 4 chairs.  Provided by the school.

Table cloth

Fake cigar

Room Set up:

I will need the space set up ahead of time.  Depending on the number of students and the size of the room, the best set up is a horseshoe arrangement of the desks or chairs.  Students with roles need to be able to easily get in and out of desks.  I need 2-3 desks in the center of the horseshoe with the open side of the horseshoe allowing access to the exit door for the room.  The open space in the center of the horseshoe needs to be at least 10 feet wide and 8-10 feet deep.  No students should be behind the open area of the horseshoe.  I’ll add a diagram below.

Pre-Show Set Up:

Other than having the desks set up, I will send a 10-15-minute video on Grant that should be shown to students the day before the Program if at all possible.  I will also need to meet with all students assigned roles for about 15 minutes before the Program begins.  This can be right before the Program(s) or in the morning before the day begins.  If needed, I can also come by the day before and meet with these students at the end of the day.  I will send the cards for the roles to the teacher about a week before the Program.  The teacher can assign all roles since they know the students better than I do.  The only real requirement for the roles is that the student be willing to be in front of the class and actively participate.  The more outgoing the students are the better, but I can work with the shy students as well.  As long as they are willing to try, we will make it work.
