It is amazing how many people you come across in the Cohutta Wilderness, and quiet often, they lead to amazing stories! And funny ones! We were headed down Potato Patch Mountain on the way home from a camping trip a while back! When we came around the curve at one of the overlooks, I pulled off to take a few pictures. I like picture, in case you haven’t noticed! Anyway, as I got out of the car, there was a family stopped in front of us taking pictures too. When I walked over, the husband asked if this was the way to the tower. Well, being where we were, I thought he meant the fire tower at the top of the mountain past Lake Consauga, so I started giving him directions to that area. As I described the way, he asked more questions like where was the paved road? How far was the walk to the tower, etc? I said, well there is no paved road, and it’s a few miles hike depending on where you start from. I was giving him directions from Lake Conasauga and from the fire road up to the tower and he looked totally confused?? The wife then said, well where do you catch the shuttle to the tower? Now I was confused? Shuttle? I’ve been coming here for over 2 years and I could not think of any kind of shuttle that travelled these roads! Finally, as I tried to figure out what in the world they were talking about when the wife said, THIS IS BRASSTOWN BALD ISN’T IT???? Click!!! Now I got it! Then I almost laughed out loud, but they were so serious, I held it in and just looked at them! Finally, when I had my laugh held in, I said, Ummmm….you are a few mountains off there….!!! As I gave them directions to how to get off this mountain and how to get to Brasstown Bald, the wife started chewing the husband out! Without really listening to my directions, they both got in the car and drove on down the mountain! I just stood there laughing and went back to the car to tell Phyllis the story! We had a good ride down the mountain laughing all the way, but not Brasstown Bald! I’m just glad I could clear it up before they went looking for the shuttle!!
