The Tennessee Blueway-The Wildlife

We normally don’t see a lot of wildlife on our trips, but this trip was entirely different from the outset! We saw a heron as we left the dock at Greenway Farm and must have seen hundreds more over the 3 days! Despite the fact that the buzzards were a little creepy, they were also fascinating to watch and we got within several feet a 3 different very large flocks! We saw dozens of hawks including numerous nests and on one dock we watched 2 hawks for about 20 minutes as they screeched at us thinking we might be there to mess with their nest! We saw them dive into the water and saw a couple haul fish away in their talons! We saw more ducks than we could count. We saw a sturgeon sitting on the bottom just hanging out in that crystal clear water. We saw BOB, my Peek-a-Boo snake! We saw deer and even heard a crazed one run into our tent (We could have lived without that one!) We were absolutely surrounded by wildlife!

Some of the best sightings were so fast that we were not able to get pictures of them! We saw 6 bald Eagles including 2 pairs that flew directly in front of our canoe! They were huge, majestic and beautiful! We saw a huge fish go right under our boat but too fast to snap the picture! Whatever was hanging around our tent chasing that deer would have made for a cool picture if I had been brave enough to go out and take the picture! We saw butterflies and other beautiful insects that are such a part of our world, but usually more feared than admired! As we paddled down the river it was easy to imagine all the creatures great and small underneath our boat, in the woods around us all going about their business! It was so peaceful, beautiful and awe inspiring!
