A Possum Hunt and a Bungalow-March 2017

Phyllis and I went to an amazing bungalow on Lookout Mountain a couple of weeks ago and had an usual experience one night! We had been out hiking and water fall searching all day and were ready for a little rest! As we showered and settled in, I looked out the window at a wooded area between our bungalow and the house next door. The woods were about 50-60 yards wide. I kept seeing a flashlight in the woods and then I heard a gunshot! This is a very public place so the gunshot surprised me. It was a .22 shot, but after hearing a few more, I was worried whoever it was might hit our car, the house or us! The flashlight was aiming up, down and all around! It stopped and started several times and I went outside a couple of times to see if I could figure out what was going on, but it was quiet. After the fourth time, I called the owner of the bungalow to ask if he knew what was going on or if this was normal! He said NO WAY! The lady at the house next door was 80 years old. He asked if I would call the police while he tried to call her! I said sure and we hung up!
Now, calling the police from Lookout Mountain turned out to be an adventure! The mountain is in 3 states and apparently in about 10 different police jurisdictions! I called 911 and they asked for the address. I then went through about 5 different police departments telling my story each time. I felt my phone receive texts while I was talking but I didn’t check them because I didn’t want to lose the police. The police said they would send a car and then I hung up!
At that point, I pulled up my text and the owner had sent a text saying the lady next door had people shooting possum that were eating food she put out for the deer! POSSUM! He said, “DON”T CALL THE POLICE!” Well……I replied “OOOOOOOOOPS! I already called!” Phyllis was laughing uncontrollably at this point and so was I! The owner came back with, “Oh well, they shouldn’t be shooting this late any way!”
Phyllis and I continued to laugh and the hunters seemed to disappear. I don’t know if the police ever showed up, but I think the possum were pretty safe based on the flashlight moving all over the place! If their aim with a gun was as bad as it was with the flashlight, the deer may be going hungry, but the possum will be fine!
